Doppelgänger

Proof-of-concept for Narcissus

At an underground club in the 1980s, a young man flirts with a mysterious older guy as a serial killer and a new “gay cancer” lurk on the sidelines. Four decades later, during the latest pandemic, the same man returns to the renovated nightclub where he meets someone as young as he was on that magical night long ago, stirring long dormant desires and fears.

This ten-minute, proof-of-concept for the feature length screenplay Narcissus, a queer drama with a giallo flair, was made at York University in Toronto. The short film and accompanying support paper were nominated for a Best Graduate Thesis award in the university’s MFA in Film Production Program. In researching the film during the COVID-19 pandemic, the filmmaker assembled a video sketchbook entitled “Reflections on Doppelgänger” which can be seen on Vimeo.
